Spurs net transfer spend: GBP 4m over 2 seasons

I was, before Martin Jol’s winning run, going to write a piece in his defence showing his record compared to that of recent years (which is good). As a companion to his points- per- game I was going to show net money spent on transfers. The problem which delayed the piece till after the winning run began was that, for all the research done, I felt I must have missed something.

I compiled all the transfers I remembered and listed on four of my most trusted sites. I discounted ins and outs where fees were undisclosed and for the transfers took the most oft reported fee as they vary from source to source. Sources included but not limited to were topspurs.com, sky sports, reuters and bbc sport. These were my most used.

This is what I came up with: a net spend of GBP 4million over two years. I hereby put this in front of Pushandrun readers because I am hard put to believe it. I am not interested in a million or two here or there because for Tottenham even a spend of GBP 12million over two years should, by the fans of one of the world’s 20 richest clubs, be considered a low investment.

Not only that, but unless I have indeed made some glaring error it makes the performance of Levy, Comolli and Jol all the more impressive. Here are the details. Please tell me what I have missed, if anything. Have I allocated players to the wrong year? Have I missed key transfers? I am mystified.

Please no squabbling over small differences in transfer amounts we are looking for a large mistake. In 70% of cases ALL sources quoted varying amounts so those arguments are counter-productive.

If these figures are correct we do have to put the future of the Lilywhites down as bright with a savvy transfer policy bringing together a quality side on a tight budget. Exactly the opposite of Spurs usual policy since pur Sugar-sweet days. In which case well done Arnesen, Levy and Comolli for putting together for GBP 4m a side that can make a GBP 220m side look like amateurs.

Let’s hope they don’t sell out to some oily-garch.

Jester
