Jol is gone and Ramos and Poyet are in… apparently
The deed is done and Martin Jol is gone. It is touted that he handed in his resignation before the match with Getafe and told the players afterwards. At least it means we know he was genuinely trying to make the team perform and not just waiting to be paid to go away.
I am told it was a surreal atmosphere in the ground with the crowd singing Jol’s name on his final day at the club. The fans trying to make up for what the board did to him and to disassociate themselves from Levy and the rest of the board. Greedy fuckers after a quick buck by my estimation. Some boos were saved for the end, it was impossible for me to tell from the television pictures whether it was for the performance of the players or the board but I’ll bet on the latter.
Clive Allen takes control as Hughton and Segers, too, are gone. Considering the state of the defence and Robinson’s goalkeeping it would not have made sense to keep either of them- the responsibility must be shared.
If Reuters are to be believed Ramos was seen quitting Sevilla today. The Times has him saying “yes” to the Tottenham deal and the Telegraph has him already signed on a four year deal worth GBP4.9mil as of 16h44 UK time. Poyet has been set up as his number 2 and has been asked not to attend the Leeds game this weekend. I am interested to see what Allen does with the team for this Saturday- and to see the player’s attitudes.
The game itself was characterised by Jol refusing to make changes when the game was stalemated and paying the price. I like the man and appreciate the results he has brought us. He also has had some phenomenal games played on the pitch under his guidance which I enjoyed immensely. I always thought of him as “the best of the rest” with just Wenger, Ferguson and perhaps Allardyce as better managers in the Premier League. Ultimately he was only ever average on tactics- hopefully Juand Ramos is better.
Assuming he is the man Ramos will, probably, adapt quickly to the English style of play as that appears to be what he had Seville playing in Spain. Also, any person who can get a lazy (if skilful) bastard Freddy Kanoute to run hard must be some kind of motivator.
Ramos took on their unbeatables of Spain in Barcelona and Real Madrid and stuffed them using not a big budget. Hopefully he can do the same for Spurs. Rest assured, though, that this man will take exactly no shit from Comolli and the board. He has proven himself with two UEFA Cups, the European Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup. Good news, methinks.
Goodbye Martin Jol. Your work was much appreciated.
